Manage Your Credit Card Debt

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Managing credit card debt at the very least gives most people a headache, and more often than not, is a major cause of poor sleep at night and major anxiety attacks. Chances are that most people you know have some amount of credit card debt. The amounts can vary from very large to not so bad, but in all cases, individuals are realizing today that they need to gain control of their budgets in order to feel in control of their lives.
More and more individuals today are turning for help in managing their finances. Managing credit card debt is a primary focus in more and more households today.

Credit card debt is unsecured debt. There are no assets involved that the lender can go after. Therefore, while many credit card companies suggest that you use a home equity loan or line of credit to eliminate your unsecured credit card debt, don’t do it. If illness, job loss, divorce, or death in the family makes it difficult or impossible to keep up with the payments, your home is in jeopardy. You do not want to pay off an unsecured debt with a debt that uses your home as collateral. Managing credit card debt is about getting control back into your life, not letting your life get out of control by putting your home in jeopardy.

You can gain control of your credit card debt through a variety of ways. You can budget realistically or live below your means. You can pay more than the minimum amount each month, even if it is only $5 extra. You can renegotiate terms.

Credit counseling is available as well as debt consolidation. Debt negotiation is a possibility and when all else fails, declaring bankruptcy is certainly the ultimate way of managing credit card debt.

Managing credit card debt is becoming big business in today’s recession. Businesses exist solely to help you survive your debt and eliminate it. They will give you advice. Be sure to research their advice carefully and above all, check with a lawyer. Once you are debt free, develop a plan so that you do not end up in debt again. Live on a budget and do not be tempted by amazing credit card offers that arrive in the mail. There are great benefits to be derived from eliminating debt. One of the greatest benefits will be peace of mind.

Beat Credit Card Debt

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

If you are behind on your bills then you may be looking for a way to learn how to beat credit card debt. Overcoming credit card debt is actually a lot easier than you might think. All it takes is a plan and a little bit of hard work.

This first part of overcoming credit card debt is determining the total amount that you owe. After that, you must determine which bills take priority each month. For example, the mortgage on your home would take priority over a bill from a department store. This will allow you to figure out which bills to pay and in what order.

The next part of conquering credit card debt is to talk to your creditors. If you explain to them that you are having a difficult time paying your bills then they will usually help you come up with a payment plan. Many individuals make the mistake of ignoring phone calls from their creditor which is a big mistake.

When trying to beat credit card debt the most important thing is to keep an open line of communication with your creditors. They would rather hear you take responsibility for your debts even if you know you cannot pay them. The worst thing that credit card companies hate is someone that tries to dodge their phone calls. If you want to beat credit card debt you are going to have to talk to your creditors.

The third part of becoming debt free is to right down all of your expenses. Even if you make a small purchase for a cup of coffee in the morning you should still write it down. After writing down your expenses, you should take a look at where you can cut back. By passing on that double latte in the morning you may be able to save as much as one hundred dollars a month!

By cutting back on your expenses you will be able to use the money you save to pay off some of your bills.  As each month passes, you will be able to use the money you save to pay off your debts. If you can find an additional source of income that will help you bring in more money it will benefit you as well. You don’t need to get an entirely new job because you may be able to use a skill you already have. For example, if you played a musical instrument in college you may be able to give music lessons on the side.

Getting Rid Of Credit Card Debt

Monday, June 29th, 2009

If you have become like many who are in debt, most of that debt will probably be credit card debt.  You may have been wondering what you need to do to help you in getting rid of credit card debt.  Bankruptcy is a solution, but many would rather pay credit card debt off and be in a good credit standing.  This can be hard to do once you are in debt.

It may be nearly impossible to pay credit card debt and still maintain a good credit rating.  There is, however, one way to do this if you are a homeowner in good standing.  You can take a second mortgage on your home and use those funds to pay credit card debt.  This will enable you to pay off your credit cards without losing your credit rating.

Another way of getting rid of credit card debt is to settle your credit card accounts with the account holders.  This way will do some damage to your credit rating, but it will not be as bad as the outstanding debt would be if it is sent to collections.  You will need to contact each institution that has given you an open line of credit by way of a credit card.

Speak to the company and try to settle down your account.  This means that you will cut up the credit card and the lien holder will close any available balance you may have.  You will not be able to use the card again.  Typically, a good portion of the interest will be removed and you will be paying strictly on the principle balance.  Some companies will not take payments on this type of settlement, but will want the entire amount at the time that the settlement has been decided upon.

In order to pay off a settlement, you may want to get a consolidation loan from your bank.  You will be getting rid of credit card debt and only have one payment to make each month and typically with a much lower interest rate that will be more manageble.

Credit Card Debt Laws

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Credit card debt is a common problem these days.  With the falling economy many people are having problems paying off their credit cards.  These same people would like to be credit card debt free.  This is not always possible and before you get into trouble with your credit cards, you may want to learn the most common credit card debt laws so that you know what your rights and responsibilities are.  This will help you keep your credit rating while still paying off your debts.

If you do fall into trouble and you have started being contacted by debt collectors, you should become familiar with some of the Fair Debt Collection laws.  Even if you owe a debt, you have rights.  Debt collectors are held by certain laws.  They have to follow these laws when they are attempting to collect a debt.

One of the most important credit card debt laws is that they must identify who they are and why they are calling.  They should also give the mini Miranda when they call.  The mini Miranda states that the phone calls are an attempt to collect a debt and that any information obtained will be used for this purpose.  They will then state the debt and the amount that you owe.  You can work payment arrangements in many instances.

Before they even call you on the phone, they must send you a letter that has the mini Miranda printed on it and an explanation of what you owe and why.  You will be given thirty days to respond to this notice.  You can either write back and dispute the debt or you can call the company and make arrangements to pay the debt off.  You will only have thirty days to dispute the debt and this must be done in writing.  The credit card debt laws state that if you do not respond in thirty days in writing that you do not dispute the debt and that you acknowledge that you owe the debt.  If you ignore the letter, you can expect a good deal of phone calls from the collection agency.

Credit Card Debt Services

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Many people fall into credit card debt.  They spend beyond their means and then have no way to pay off the debt.  This can happen at any age and for many reasons.  Once you have become a victim of credit card debt, you may be looking at ways of reducing credit card debt.  One way to do this is to contact one of the many credit card debt services that can be found in the phone book or online.

Before you commit to one of the credit card debt services, you should research them and make sure they are a legitimate company.  There are many companies that claim that they can help reduce credit card debt when in actuality all they offer is a scam.  They will take your money and you will still have your old credit card debt.

One good way of reducing credit card debt is to quit using the credit cards.  This sounds simple, but many people who are in credit card are still using the open lines of credit on their cards that have balances.  Then they wonder how they will pay off that debt.  If you need to, cut up all of your credit cards so you will not be tempted to use them.

Once you have done this, you can contact one of the reputable credit card debt services to help you pay off your existing balances.  Many times this means you will only be making one payment a month.  Part of your monthly payment will go to the credit card debt service and the rest will be applied to your balances.

The credit card debt services will handle all the communications with your creditors.  You will not have to worry about those stressful debt collection phone calls.  You will simply give them the number of the credit card debt service you are going through and have them handle all the details.  The only thing you will need to worry about is making your monthly payment.  This loss of stress is one reason these types of companies are so popular.
